We invite attendees and presenters to honor the communities in which they serve by reimagining relationships through self-reflection, community engagement, and collective action. We must find a way to build community and connection in order to dismantle oppressive systems and create a more just society.

VIRTUAL KEYNOTE: Lorena Germán

Lorena is a two time nationally awarded Dominican American educator focused on anti racist and anti bias education. She’s been featured in the New York Times, NPR, PBS, Rethinking Schools, EdWeek, Learning for Justice Magazine, and more. She published The Anti Racist Teacher: Reading Instruction Workbook, and Textured Teaching: A Framework for Culturally Sustaining Practices about curriculum & lesson development focused on social justice. She’s a co-founder of #DisruptTexts and Multicultural Classroom. Lorena is also the Chair of NCTE’s Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English. She lives in Tampa, Florida where she is a mami and wife- two of her most important roles. |

Meet the Panelists
Maria Parker
Bilingual Educator, Pacheco Elementary School An award-winning educator, Maria Parker has been in the classroom for seven years. She taught for five years as a middle school math teacher in Salinas. There, she developed her own bilingual program for newcomers to access the curriculum. Recently, she has been teaching at Pacheco Elementary in their Dual Immersion program. Maria's passions include math education, bilingual education, and social justice practices in the classroom. She is in the process of finishing her Master's degree in Educational Leadership & Administration at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. As a Latinx educational leader, Maria continues her work as an advocate to empower BIPOC students and staff. |
Itzelt Santos
Community Educator Itzelt was born and raised on the beautiful Central Coast to two immigrant parents from Michoacan and Guerrero, Mexico. Growing up as a first-generation student was difficult and there were many times Itzelt tried to assimilate to fit in. However, her parents always tried their best to show the beauty and resilience of their native country and culture to their children. After studying Chicana Chicano Studies at San Diego State University and being involved in different grassroots efforts, Itzelt decided she needed to come back home to help in the community she grew up in. After many part-time jobs, starting and leaving a graduate program at Cal Poly, Itzelt finally found an organization that aligned with her values of education and community. As a Regional Coordinator and CELEBRE (College Enrollment for Latinas Entering Bright Rewarding Educations) Coordinator for People’s Self-Help Housing Itzelt has been able to help change lives and strengthen her community on the Central Coast. |
Oscar Velasco
Social Science Teacher, Santa Maria High School Oscar Velasco was born and raised in Santa Maria. He is the son of farmworkers and immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico. He attended Cal Poly SLO where he earned his BA in History and later on his teaching credential in Social Science and Masters in Instruction and Curriculum. Oscar currently teaches World and U.S. History at his alma mater, Santa Maria High School. Oscar also coaches wrestling, and assists with the Alpine club on campus, a club where students are introduced to outdoors adventure. Oscar is passionate about helping students realize their own potential and be part of the transformation and development of Santa Maria, CA. Cesar Vasquez
High School Student, Central Coast Cesar Vasquez is fifteen years old, a proud Santa Maria resident, and a freshman at Central Coast New Tech High. Cesar has been a part of Future Leaders of America since 8th grade and ever since has stayed involved in the community. Cesar has led marches, speaking at different events and meetings, including school board meetings and by facilitating youth group meetings at FLA and other youth organizations. Cesar has a passion for helping people and advocating for their community. |
